Project Overview

Disclaimer: This is a project that creates an imaginary sports team and develops a fan site. The ideation and creation of the Cincinnati Strikers are fictional and do not represent any current sports team in basketball.

The mobile website will be run and owned by fans of the Cincinnati Strikers, who are unaffiliated with the team organization. This will be a mobile website on the Cincinnati Strikers, a fictional NBA sports expansion team. The Cincinnati Strikers are beloved by the people of Cincinnati since their start in the basketball scene. This website will allow their fans and followers alike to come together and share game highlights, player stats, game coverage for the upcoming seasons, community events, and fan created content.

Roles and Responsibilities

I, Tereza Garcia took the role of UX designer to complete the creation of this design. My roles include:

  • Lead Researcher
  • Lead Designer
  • Lead Tester

Problem Statement

Basketball fans in Cincinnati have not had a proper NBA team since the Cincinnati Royals in 1957. Basketball is a popular sport in the United States and Cincinnati, Ohio is no exception. Cincinnati is in need of a new basketball team to revive the basketball scene with a new and young expansive team. The Cincinnati Strikers are on the rise and will need an online presence to lift the basketball community to its new prime.

The Cincinnati Striker’s fan site will put all focus on providing a solution to the identified issue by providing a fan-run digital hub for Cincinnati basketball fans. The mobile site will allow the fans to congregate and share their enthusiasm for the sport as well as hype up the games for the Cincinnati Strikers.

Research

Disclaimer: As part of the creation and ideation process of the imaginary team, ChatGPT was used to create the teams identity. This was done for research purposes only and was not used in the creation of the app design.

Additional Research Notes

These were additional research notes that were documented for this design:

  • Cincinnati, Ohio has not had a steady NBA team since the early 1900’s. The Cincinnati Royals were the last team to be based in the area until their move to Sacramento.
  • Cincinnati currently has a popular college team, The Cincinnati Bearcats, that is currently the most well known basketball team in the area.

According to the Bearcats history, there have been a few players from Cincinnati who have been picked for the NBA draft. Some picks were Martin for the 2000’s draft for the New Jersey Nets and DerMarr Johnson who was picked by the Atlanta Hawks.

With the prompts and research I began to ideate a fictional expansion team and create the name and logo for the fictional team.

Design Process

After my research on expansion team and choosing what sport to make a design for, I started on the wireframes to get an idea for next phase.

Usability Testing

My tester initial task was to navigate and browse the website. Some comments I got was that some flows to certain pages either did not work. I also did not have a sticky header, so when the user scrolled the header would disappear. My navigation was critiqued and needed work done. The main issue for the navigation was the text was too large and would not align with the menu box. The tabs would also not close properly after being open.

This feedback was necessary because I did not realize how much was need to be fixed. My tester were able to finish task such as navigating to certain pages while but faced issues along the way.

Takeaways

This was a new design that I had not worked on before. This was a mix of desktop and app put together. Mobile websites will sometimes take on a design where the website is accessed on a browser instead of an application. A hybrid take was very interesting to do and I used my knowledge of mobile first design while keeping it to mobile desktop hybrid. Creating the fictional team was also something new to me because I am personally not interested in sports. It was good practice for when I may have to ideate new fictional groups, sports teams etc.
